It was clear from the atmosphere of the sessions that something special was taking place. However, no one could have predicted that it would become a worldwide phenomenon, win a Grammy and sell over 8 million copies. The acclaim elevated the artists (including Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, Eliades Ochoa, Compay Segundo and Omara Portuondo) to superstar status, inspired an award-winning film by Wim Wenders, a Tony Award-winning musical and contributed to popularizing Cuba’s rich musical heritage.
